2 Way Windermere - full of surprises

At 0715 on a beautiful May Day Andrew stood on the jetty as prepared as ever for his 2 Way Windermere. Water temperature at 14 degrees and conditions still, the start was simply beautiful. Andrew doesn't do things by halves and had only had a 24 hour rest from a Marathon Swim on the Saturday, but with his 3 Lakes Solo Challenge later in the year this was great preparation.

Andrew started with a 45 minute feeding schedule and conditions stayed like a millpond for the first 5 hours stint, I say this like it was a splash in a pond, but Andrew kept a great strong cadence and his stroke count maintained throughout.

With the fifth hour passed Windermere decided to mix things up for Andrew and the wind picked up slightly, but enough to knock Andrew stride disrupting his technique. Pushing hard against the Western Shore felt like it was forever for Andrew but t 6 hours 09 mins he had completed his 1 way, jetty touched and off down to Ambleside.

On the return the leg the wind was still playing its part gently helping Andrew fly down the Lake. Several flyovers from the RAF Chinooks and jets made great entertainment although Andrew was oblivious at times. However the fun was about to end as once passed Storrs Hall the wind decided to blow across the Lake shaking the latter part of the swim up for Andrew. A rather frustrated Andrew was finding it uncomfortable at times, as we held the tightest line to Ambleside we would often be pointing sideways on to hold the line. Annoying to swimmers but the only way when you have a boat sat in the water maintaining the swimmers pace with a wind having different ideas . We crossed the Lake at this point to ensure Andrew was guided the most sheltered route and he continued to power on.

Andrew continued with the same focus as when he started out. 13 hours and 6 minutes later he completed his supersonic 2 Way Windermere. That's what we call a 'Great Day on the Lake'
