After over 15 months of training and mental preparation the time finally came for Team Delta to take on one of the most recognised swims in the World , The English Channel. In swim order we had Phil Jackson, David Dutton, Heather Walmsley, Carol Lord, Nikki Pope and Barbara Williams. On board The Connemara was pilot Kevin Sherman, 2 x CSA Observers and my self Karen. Dave was on land this time and in charge of updating social media.
The swim started at 0415 from Samphire Hoe which meant the first 2 swims were in the dark. The whole team had prepared well but it was not long before 2 swimmers were experiencing the dreaded sea sickness despite taking precautions. The weather was great and although the forecast had predicted an increase in wind nearer to France, this was not the case. It was a little lumpy in parts and obviously swimming through the busy shipping channel was a little rock and roll , but the team continued. Social media was brilliant and messages of support came through the whole crossing. I had arranged for special messages to be written and handed these to the team after their first swim which certainly brought to home how much people were behind them. Some swimmers were doing this to raise money for charity and some were putting to bed demons from a previous swim, either way they all gave it 100%.
14 hours and 6 minutes later and they had done it. They had become English Channel Swimmers. A fabulous team effort.
