A grey Monday and a long time coming, we met Audrey Hellen for her test of strength a Solo Windermere. Audrey isnt just another swimmer trying to swim 10.5 miles, this swim meant a lot more than touching the jetty in Ambleside. She had a point to prove. After battling cancer and only returning to work recently following an 18 month absence, this swim was about what she has overcome, and what you can do despite everything.
Audrey has a beautiful technique and has come a long way in the many years we have known her. She set off from Fell Foot Park and was steady away. The weather wasn't exactly bright, but it was dry and there was no wind. Audrey started with hourly feeds and the social media was booming with support for her.
We passed the Ferry Crossing and at the point of the next feed, informed Audrey that we were just over half way. This was around 4 hours and 25 minutes into the swim. Audrey answered with "is that all?".
As we continued, Audrey's pace began to slow and we had the difficult conversation on board that the swim was likely going to be pulled. Stroke count had reduced from 56 to 48 nd Audrey had also stopped to tell us she was cold. We always try and push the swimmer a little bit longer and we said we would reassess after a warm drink. However Audreys stroke count continued to drop. It was a mutual agreement to end the swim at a superb 6 hours. An English Channel Solo Qualifier in the bag.
Audrey was clearly disappointed, but also super proud of her achievement. This was a big feat and a huge confidence boost after the last couple of years challenges. Truly inspirational lady and I am sure she will be back to touch that jetty.
